Spanglish Meetups
Why Community Matters & Why You Should Join Us
I'm a millennial woman from the US, living in Costa Rica with my two fur babies 🐈🐈. I have a perpetually messy house and a very confusingly organized computer desktop 🤯. I stare at myself on Zoom all day and sometimes can’t step away from my computer for more than 5 minutes at a time without thinking of all the things I ‘should’ be doing. I am a small business owner and what I do takes up all of my time but I say it’s okay because, well, it's my passion. I know that my day-to-day is farless chaotic than most of my peers AND I love what I do, so I limit my complaints. Yet, no matter what, the universal struggles still find their way to me.
Ever feel one step behind because of your insanely color coded Google Calendar?
Ever crave more productivity because social media tells you that you are “behind”?
Realize you haven’t left your house or talked to someone face to face in 5 days? 😬#Yikes. (Shoutout to Taylor Swift, my constant companion.)
Does at least some of that sound familiar? I bet it does.
Nope… I KNOW it does. How do I know?
Well, in my world of English teaching and coordinating Speak More, I meet incredible people every day, and guess what? Be it students, fellow teachers, parents of the kids in the program, or prospective students, I hear the same three things over and over again…
#1.⏱️ "I have to make every second count!" We all feel like time is limited and feeling stressed, tired and busy is constant.
#2. 📈“I need to be improving myself!!” We all seem to choose two or three and pressure ourselves to improve in things like: language skills, professionally, financially etc.
#3. 👥"I want to meet new people." We all realize our priorities are a little off and we spend too much time looking at a screen- we crave human connection.
I say this.
Students say this.
Our teachers say this.
My friends say this.
WE ALL SAY THIS!
I could only hear this so many times before I I decided to take some action. So, the concept of "Spanglish meetups" was born. The concept is pretty simple: get people together and see where the conversations and connections take us!
➕Ticos.
➕Gringos.
➕Everyone in between.
➕Food.
➕Drinks.
➕A cool location.
➖Minus the pressure.
Our language learning community revolves around two things: helping you reach your goals and having fun while doing it. That's why we host events – creating a space that's free from pressure, cost, and obligations. Whether you speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, or a delightful combo of all three, you're more than welcome to join us. 🫶
Sure, you could stick to solo "self-improvement courses/books/exercises" in your cozy isolation. You could hang out with the same crew every day. And yes, you could keep Netflix company on your own repeatedly.
Orrrr…. hear me out…. you could meet people from different corners of the globe, varying cultures, languages, generations, and backgrounds. Imagine having unexpected chats with people you wouldn't meet otherwise and learning random, cool things from fascinating folks! The choice is yours, but we highly recommend the latter. We welcome you, the buddy you bring along with you just in case you need backup, and everyone else!
So to bring us back to what I mentioned at the beginning about what we have in common. No, one or two of these “Spanglish meetups” won’t solve all of our “universal struggles”. But they will remind us that we aren’t alone and that we can find people feeling the same way we are. We can let ourselves have some fun and organize those desktop folders later… Just add it to your google calendar!
🗓️Mark your calendars for the next meetup – it's a date you won't want to miss! We're pumped to welcome you into the community, introduce you to our fantastic language-loving crew, and discover all the awesome details about you too.
We can't wait to see you there! 😉
