Fluency First
“Fluency First” ... If you’ve been with Speak More With Me for any amount of time you have definitely heard your teacher say this a hundred times.
But why? Well, let us explain…
Learning a new language can be scary and vulnerable and you might be very hesitant. This is normal at the beginning and even after you’ve been at it for a while! But, here's a little secret: you don't have to be perfect to use the language! Being able to say more, even if it is not perfect, is the first step in learning a new language.
That's why at Speak More With Me we believe in "Fluency First."
In language learning, being “fluent” means you can say more things, even if it's not perfect. “Fluency” does NOT mean perfection. Imagine this: you're in a foreign country, and you want to ask for directions, share a story with a new friend or get help in a store; it's okay if your grammar isn't spot on or if you take an extra second to find the correct words – what matters most is that you TRY and that you get your idea across!
Sure, accuracy is important, but it comes with time and practice. Think of it like riding a bike; you will wobble at first, and you might literally fall completely down too! But we all know that the more you ride, the smoother you get. Making mistakes is part of the learning process, and it's totally okay.
We put fluency first because it's the key to moving forward with a language and building the connections you need to keep you motivated to continue. You don't have to wait until you're a language expert to start talking. The more you speak, the more confident you become, and the better you get.
